Government Covers Up Firework Injuries

GOVERNMENT THROUGH THE BUSINESS ENTERPRISE ENTERPRISE REGULATORY REFORM FORMERLY DTI DID NOT COMPILE NATIONAL FIREWORK INJURY STATISTICS LAST YEAR AFTER 40 YEARS NOR WILL THEY COMPILE THEM IN THE FUTURE A SPOKESMAN SAID.

The Government through the DTI now the BERR Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reforms have decided that they will no longer compile National Firework Injury Statistics and Incidents for the first time in 40 years. Until the weekend the BERR website had a headline which suggested that they had figures for last year. On Monday morning the website said they had no figures because they had not compiled them for the first time last year.

After phoning the Dept we were told that they had not compiled figures last year from the hospitals nor would they compile them this year or ever again. They said this decision had been taken last July but on questioning they said that there had been no public announcement then.

Noel Tobin, Director of the National Campaign for Firework Safety said that this would be a great shock to most safety organisations and people in the UK who depended on the Firework Survey to understand what was going on in the country and see a national picture. This had never been done before. Last night Noel Tobin wrote to the Minister Gareth Thomas and asked him to reverse this decision, so that all information available from the hospitals would be taken this year and for the future and properly analyzed and released to the public.
