Follow -up to the October-November Firework Season

The main issues which should have been discussed by the media about Fireworks this year seemed to go for a burton because of main world news items which cut across the publicity area. Unfortunately too many of the big News organisations had left all their discussion until Sunday November 5 when the Sadam death sentence broke through. When we tried to get through to them they said they were up to to their eyes with the Sadam story.

Pity really because our main items got lost in the news chain.

A few days earlier going through all the 150 newspapers we trawl each year we had seen the usual horror stories about animals having fireworks taped to them and blown to smithereens. It was while we were looking at the Health & Safety Executive site, however, that we found something we thought had been done away with years ago. That is the right for individuals to hold 50 Kilos of their own fireworks, in what has since been defined as Hazard 4 Fireworks for displays, without any kind of license. Therefore you have only got to purchase them from a trader.

This is alarmingly close to category 4 fireworks which are supposed to be banned to the public and are sold under license for displays. We have had enough trouble with even these being sold legally. Now we discover there is a Hazard 4 Fireworks being sold possibly in upper category 3 without a license. Would the traders be at all concerned? We doubt it when it comes to selling big fireworks for profit. Category 4/Hazard 4 so what they would say, if prosecuted we thought they said Hazard 4. What is a hazard anyway. I mean are they actually going to carry out a risk assessment. The answer is a big NO. Get rid of all fireworks that are not sold under license for big organised firework displays to trained people.

That is the view of the National Campaign for Firework Safety. It is the view of the majority out there taken in opinion polls, letters to newspapers, Radio phone -ins etc.
